Opportunities for enthusiastic portfolio career GPs in the Urgent Care Team
Posts commence from: To be agreed,
We are seeking energetic and enthusiastic doctors to contribute to the exciting and forward thinking multidisciplinary A+E department in Hayward's Heath. This role will bring integrated working to the Emergency Department, with streaming of Primary Care conditions at the 'front door' of Urgent Care provision. The post will suit Primary Care physicians with an interest in urgent and acute care who wish to join on a sessional basis with a Trust making robust plans for the future of Urgent Care. The ability to self-roster will allow successful candidates to maintain a good work-life balance.
The Trust has recently had investment as part NHS England's interest in Primary Care in the Emergency Department. A successful capital build bid was made, bolstering the plans which were already in place, and the department has been awarded 960,000 to this effect. We believe that this will go some way to creating an enviable environment to work for our Primary Care Physicians.
Also attractive is the governance structure which brings all clinicians under the Trust. This will mean that indemnity is covered by the Trust and that non-clinical activity can be recognised as part of this role.
This is an opportunity to join Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trusts, working in partnership with Horsham and Mid-Sussex CCG. The service welcomes applications for part and flexible time GPs to join our A & E service at the Princess Royal Hospital, Hayward's Heath. The service is supported by a cohesive and friendly group of Consultants with a sound vision of how to progress Emergency Medicine and proactive Consultant and Nursing leads who are developing new ways of working in the ED at the Princess Royal Hospital.
Job Summary
Acute Care GPs (ACGPs) are important members of the team in the Emergency Department at the Princess Royal Hospital, Haywards Heath. The post holder will have a key role in assessing and managing patients who present to the ED with conditions that are not immediately life-threatening. The ACGP will work within the ED department providing primary care assessment, investigations and patient management, including where necessary obtaining secondary care opinion or admission for medically unwell adults and children. The post holder will provide Primary Care input/advice for other ED clinicians as necessary.
All ACGPs are expected to remain current in Primary Care experience by doing a minimum of one session per week in a GP surgery.
Clinical Duties and Responsibilities
The post holder will be working in the Emergency Department overseeing clinical care at the Princess Royal Hospital, Hayward's Heath on a sessional basis.
GPs who are appointed will work on a flexible, annualised, semi-self rostering system, which was developed as a gold standard by the Royal College of Emergency Medicine, and used by the BSUH A & E Consultants. This would suit GPs who want the flexibility of sessional work but with the guarantee of permanent appointments and associated employment rights, as well as indemnity costs paid for by the NHS trust.
Appointed GPs would negotiate how many sessions per week they wanted to work. (a 'session' equals 4 hrs between hours of 7am-7pm, mon-fri and 3 hours at all other time including bank holidays.) This would be annualised to work out how many sessions they would work in a year, with full allocation of study leave, annual leave, bank holidays and non shop floor clinical work incorporated into the calculations - this is guaranteed and does not have to be requested separately.
There will be one shift 2pm-10pm per day, 7 days a week. We are therefore looking to appoint a minimum of 5 GPs who will work part time in this role and between them cover all shifts including the weekends, with a even distribution of the weekends. There would be great flexibility of when people could work dependent on personal circumstances and service needs and so some appointed staff would work fixed days and others work for a few days at a time and then prolonged periods of time off.
The ability to self-roster will allow successful candidates to maintain a good work-life balance and a portfolio career which combines the job with our roles and responsibilities
Working part time with an annualised self-rostering system will enable 1 in 4 to 1 in 5 weekend cover.
6.25% of time would be anticipated as non-clinical duties; this would be equivalent to half an hour for two four-hour sessions.
